The East Midlands West Maths Hub (EMWMH) is a collaborative network that strengthens maths education across the region by connecting schools with expert practitioners, research-informed approaches and high-quality professional development. It is DfE-funded and coordinated by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).
Our school has partnered with EMWMH because we share the belief that “Every child a mathematician” is not just an aspiration, but a collective responsibility. Through access to nationally recognised Teaching for Mastery programmes, subject-specific training and a supportive community of maths specialists, our staff have deepened their understanding of how children learn mathematics and strengthened the way we plan, teach and assess maths across the school.
This partnership has helped us to build strong foundations in number, develop pupils’ mathematical language, and create consistent approaches from the early years through to Key Stage 2, supporting transition into secondary school. It has supported our teachers and subject leaders to feel more confident in designing lessons that promote fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, while ensuring that all pupils are included, challenged and supported.
Working with EMWMH has enabled us to promote equity as we continue developing classrooms where every child, regardless of their starting point, can experience success in mathematics and grow as a confident, curious and capable mathematician.
In short, the partnership has provided valuable professional development, strengthened subject leadership and helped us create a shared vision for excellent maths teaching and learning.
